# Configuration

> Environment variables the CLI reads and the files it keeps.

The CLI needs no configuration file of your own: `artil auth login` saves the
login, and `artil init` and `artil secrets link` record what they set up. These
variables change where it looks and how it behaves.

## Environment variables

| Variable | Purpose |
| - | - |
| `ARTIL_TOKEN` | Token every command signs in with, ahead of the saved login; `auth login` saves it. |
| `ARTIL_CONFIG_HOME` | Directory for the CLI's local configuration and login. |
| `XDG_CONFIG_HOME` | When no explicit config directory is set, configuration goes in its `artil` subdirectory. |
| `ARTIL_NO_AUTOUPDATE` | Any non-empty value turns off the hourly background update. |
| `HERMES_HOME` | Hermes directory that `init` and secret links use; defaults to `~/.hermes`. |
| `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` | Claude Code configuration directory that `init` and secret links edit; defaults to `~/.claude`. |
| `PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR` | Pi configuration directory that `init` and secret links edit; defaults to `~/.pi/agent`. |
| `NO_COLOR` | Turn off colors in the terminal menu. |

## Files

The default configuration directory is `~/.config/artil`:

* `credentials.json` holds the login.
* `config.json` holds this computer's ID and name.
* `secrets.json` records local secret links.
* `secrets/claude-code.sh` holds the secrets linked to Claude Code.
* `secrets/pi.sh` holds the secrets linked to Pi.
* `update.json` records the last background update check.
* `hermes.log` is the local Hermes log, and `hermes-cursor.json` records the
  last message local Hermes handled.
* `hermes-webhook.json` records the remote Hermes webhook set up here.
