# Installation and updates

> Install the standalone CLI on macOS or Linux and keep it current.

## Install

The standalone CLI supports macOS and Linux on arm64 and x64. It does not
require Bun or Node.js.

```bash theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://app.artil.dev/install.sh | bash
```

Check that the CLI prints a version number:

```bash theme={null}
artil --version
```

The installer selects the build for your machine and verifies its SHA-256
checksum. It stores versions under `~/.local/share/artil/versions` and places
the `artil` launcher in `~/.local/bin`.

If your shell cannot find the command, add `~/.local/bin` to PATH in your shell
configuration. To use it in the current terminal:

```bash theme={null}
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
artil --version
```

</Card>

## Update

When you run a command, a standalone installation checks for updates in the
background, at most once an hour. The next command uses any installed update.

Update immediately:

```bash theme={null}
artil --update
```

Set `ARTIL_NO_AUTOUPDATE=1` in the environment to disable background updates.
An explicit `artil --update` still works.

## Set up through an agent

Give your coding agent the installation instructions at
[app.artil.dev/INSTALL.md](https://app.artil.dev/INSTALL.md).
If you use a different Artil server, use its `/INSTALL.md` address. During
browser login, choose the agent you want the CLI to use.
