# Choose your client

> Use your agent's email and SMS from Claude Code, Pi, or Hermes.

Choose the coding client that will use your agent's inbox. Each client uses
the agent selected by `artil auth login` in the [quickstart](/index).

## Check messages in a conversation

The Claude Code plugin and Pi extension let your coding agent check an inbox,
read a message, and reply from your agent's address or number. Ask it to check
email or SMS, or to read a verification email while working on a task.

For incoming notifications, set up automatic delivery below. To give a client
stored API keys or passwords, [link its credentials](/secrets).

## React when a message arrives

For automatic delivery, `artil init` connects Claude Code or Hermes:

| Client | What happens when a message arrives |
| - | - |
| Claude Code | An open session receives a notification. |
| Local Hermes | A background job starts a Hermes run on this computer. |
| Remote Hermes | A webhook notifies your running Hermes server. |

SMS requires [Personal SMS setup](/sms), which is currently in beta. You can
use email without setting up SMS.
