Configuration - Artil

The CLI needs no configuration file of your own: artil auth login saves the login, and artil init and artil secrets link record what they set up. These variables change where it looks and how it behaves.

Environment variables

Variable	Purpose
`ARTIL_TOKEN`	Token every command signs in with, ahead of the saved login; `auth login` saves it.
`ARTIL_CONFIG_HOME`	Directory for the CLI’s local configuration and login.
`XDG_CONFIG_HOME`	When no explicit config directory is set, configuration goes in its `artil` subdirectory.
`ARTIL_NO_AUTOUPDATE`	Any non-empty value turns off the hourly background update.
`HERMES_HOME`	Hermes directory that `init` and secret links use; defaults to `~/.hermes`.
`CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR`	Claude Code configuration directory that `init` and secret links edit; defaults to `~/.claude`.
`PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR`	Pi configuration directory that `init` and secret links edit; defaults to `~/.pi/agent`.
`NO_COLOR`	Turn off colors in the terminal menu.

Files

The default configuration directory is ~/.config/artil:

credentials.json holds the login.
config.json holds this computer’s ID and name.
secrets.json records local secret links.
secrets/claude-code.sh holds the secrets linked to Claude Code.
secrets/pi.sh holds the secrets linked to Pi.
update.json records the last background update check.
hermes.log is the local Hermes log, and hermes-cursor.json records the last message local Hermes handled.
hermes-webhook.json records the remote Hermes webhook set up here.
